News: Foursquare update brings major redesign

Foursquare has released an update to its popular location-based social networking application for the iPhone and iPod touch. Sporting a completely redesigned user interface, the update also provides a more efficient checkin process, category support in the “Places” view and a pull-down-to-refresh option. Users can also now view a history of where they’ve been, and locations now display category icons and more detailed address information.…

UpNext has released an update to its interactive 3D city map application for the iPhone and iPod touch, adding support for three new cities and integration into the Foursquare location sharing service. In addition to New York City, the update now adds 3D maps for Boston, Washington, DC and Austin, Texas. GDC 2010: Canabalt postmortem

“What kinds of games do you like?” Adam “Atomic” Saltsman asked of his panel audience at the Canabalt postmortem during the Game Developer’s Conference in San Francisco. “Role-playing” was yelled out, as was “puzzler,” and eventually Saltsman picked “platformer” as the genre. Without another word, he quietly went to work on a laptop. Then, his partner at Semi Secret Software, Eric Johnson, took the podium to tell us all about what it was like to make one of the App Store’s most popular games.

He started by saying that the game was originally developed in just “five very long days,” and was created for the Experimental Gameplay Project and based around simplicity — it only uses six colors and, obviously, the one button. For a game that’s so simple, it actually had a lot of complex influences. It drew from older games, like Another World and Flashback, as well as modern works, like Half-Life 2 and District 9.

Alamofire has released a major update to its Gowalla location sharing application for the iPhone and iPod touch, introducing a completely new interface design and support for several new features. Gowalla 2.0 now allows users to upload photos when checking in, browse photos from friends, or view photos that were taken at a specific location.
