If you were disappointed that you can’t upload full 720p video from your iPhone 4 to YouTube without transferring it to a computer first, then check out the latest update to the free app Pixelpipe.

While there has been some speculation over whether app developers would be able to access the full-resolution videos for sharing, commenters were quick to assure us there was no reason to worry. Pixelpipe claims that it will share your edited mobile masterpiece in all its splendor not only with YouTube but also to Flickr, Facebook, MobileMe, Viddler, Posterous and a bunch of other video-capable sites (as well email and FTP) for videos up to 200MB.

The update to 2.01 is also quick to add iOS 4.0 multitasking for background uploading and should continue to serve as a semi-ubiquitous multi-tool for getting our videos (and pictures) uploaded almost anywhere you want them to go. We mentioned Pixelpipe previously around the time of the 3GS launch last year; it seems to have come a long way since then.

It is worth noting that some users seem to be experiencing some instability with the app that will hopefully get ironed out quickly. If you are having trouble with it, keep your eyes peeled for other developers to follow up with alternatives now that we know 720p uploading is possible.

Update: Reader Aaron notes that SmugShot is also 720p-upload enabled.

Hulu has finally announced their long-rumored subscription service, and it’s a doozy. It’s called Hulu Plus. For US$9.99 per month, you’ll get you ad-supported access to the full current seasons of most shows and full back seasons of select shows. Plus, brand new Hulu Plus apps for the iPhone and the iPad will bring the television to you. The apps work over either WiFi or 3G, though the iPhone version requires iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4. The service sounds pretty good — I would have to untangle my internet service from my cable bill, but otherwise, a system like this might just replace my cable box.

The apps are supposed to be available today, but they’re not on the App Store quite yet, apparently. Meanwhile, Hulu is sending out invites to the service as we speak — sign up, tell them what devices you’ve got and a few demographic bits, and wait for the email to show up. The Netflix app on the iPad has already been a hit since launch, and this Hulu Plus service seems like it’ll be just as popular.

Update: The apps are now in the App Store, although of course you need a preview account to use them.

With all the talk about the Death Grip, we’ve been discussing how we hold our iPhones. Most people, right-handed or left, have their own preference. Additionally, each person has several positions: One-handed carry, while not using the phone; one-handed swipe and tap with a thumb; two-handed touch type (usually the same for gaming/using apps) and the position used during a phone call.

We want to see how you hold your iPhone. Take a picture and add it to our Flickr pool with the tag “iphonehold.” I chose to photograph myself holding my 3GS in the “one handed swipe and tap” position, as that’s how I hold it most often. But you can photograph any position you like.

If you don’t have an iPhone 4, post a picture anyway. We’ll review them during the week and offer a round-up later.

iSuppli has done its usual thing with the16GB iPhone 4‘s components, calculating the raw cost of each of them, and the total comes to: US$187.51. The most expensive thing in the phone is the retina display screen, which is supposedly running Apple $28.50 per unit. The A4 processor adds $10.75 to the unit price, and the gyroscope adds $2.60, as compared to the accelerometer’s estimated 65 cent cost.

You may remember that the iPhone 3GS was estimated to cost $179 last year at release — the price on those components has dropped to $134, even though the phone itself is being sold at $99 (but Apple is probably just selling off inventory — an unsold phone isn’t worth anything to them). The 3GS was also $199 at launch, which means that Apple is making $10 less per phone with the iPhone 4, but maybe they’re making up the costs elsewhere, maybe in advertising or R&D. Of course, these are all estimates — there are all sorts of other factors going into this cost equation, both internally at Apple and in the manufacturing industry. But iSuppli has been doing this for a while now, and if they say the screen is the priciest component in your new iPhone, they’re probably right.
