Angry Birds HD updated with more levels… and crashiness

June 30th, 2010 | No Comments »

Angry Birds has been a phenomenal success, staying atop the App Store best seller list for months. I too, succumbed to the “bird in a slingshot” craze, as has my eight year old son who told me the other night he dreamed that he was in the slingshot.

Angry Birds HD
was one of the first that I downloaded for the iPad, but I was pretty disappointed. While the game was only $0.99, the HD version was $4.99, following an unfortunate trend where are ported to iPad, cost much more, and don’t add any new features. But Angry Birds HD actually had fewer features and levels than the version. Rovio told us at E3 that they’d be fixing that soon.

Well, as promised, an came out a few days ago which added more levels and brought the game up to par with the version. Unfortunately the game has also added what one friend called “extreme crashiness action.” So far I haven’t actually lost any progress due to a crash, but it’s fairly annoying. Hopefully there will be another soon.

As a side note, developer Marco Arment noted back in May that the App Store was full of scams and ripoff surrounding Angry Birds, some which use the same name, and others which use the same artwork. It’s sad to see that these are still there, and to know that they are profiting unfairly off the success of a popular game. Why would allow some of these to remain and purge others is beyond me.

TUAW’s Daily App: Pix’n Love Rush

June 29th, 2010 | No Comments »

I first heard about Pix’n Love Rush about a month ago from my colleague, JC.Fletcher, who described it as “a short, nervous, ristretto version of a platformer … a sort of crossover between Mario and WarioWare, with a pinch of Galaxian and a hint of Game & Watch.” And now that it’s out on the App Store to play, I can say that’s exactly what it is; it’s a weird little mini platform game, with an art aesthetic that might turn off those not versed in gaming history.

The basic idea is that you play as a cat-like creature, and you bounce around a randomized series of 125 various 2D platforming stages, collecting good icons and staying away from bad ones. The gameplay is frenetic but forgiving. There are big bonuses to be had if you can pull things off perfectly (the colors and graphics flip through various designs), but even if you miss a few icons, the game will let you run through some quick platforming pleasures in a few modes.

If your taste in begins and ends with FarmVille, this one’s probably not for you. But if you’re interested in experimental and art , or if you just want to spend a quick 99 cents to see what this crazy, original gaming experience is like, give Pix’n Love Rush a try. It’s definitely not a traditional title, but if you want to take a few steps off the beaten path in terms of gaming, there’s a lot of fun to find.

Hands on with Poker Smash for iPhone

June 28th, 2010 | No Comments »

Filed under:

I recently had the opportunity to spend playing Drew Card’s Poker Smash game. Built for iPhone, this application offers standard matching game strategy (think “Bejeweled” or “Tetris”) mixed with a bit of Poker savvy. With Poker Smash, you can eliminate cards by matching 3 of a kind, but you can also go for straights, flushes, full houses, and so forth. That adds a pleasant layer of complexity to what would otherwise be an ordinary game.

As progresses, cards move up the screen — first slowly, and then as the game proceeds, much faster. You can slide cards left and right, but not up and down. Your goal is to create winning poker hands, allowing those cards to be eliminated from the stack. Better hands receive better special effects — a straight or a flush produces in-game minimalist fireworks.

Poker Smash is not a terribly deep game but it’s an amusing one, and one that’s perfect for short times when you just want to play a little when sitting in a waiting room or caught on a bus. I found that it quickly engaged my interest and that I was disappointed to hear my name called or my stop approach. Selling for just two bucks, it’s a good value too.

Poker Smash was originally developed for the Xbox 360 LIVE Arcade. that can make the leap from another platform to the tend to include strong offerings, having been worth the extra development costs needed to create the port. I enjoyed playing Poker Smash and can unreservedly recommend it as a nice little addition to your gaming arsenal.

iPhone 4 takes great pictures, breaks up robbery

June 28th, 2010 | No Comments »

Filed under:

There are many iPhone 4 photos already populating the Interwebs, but relatively few of those galleries end with law enforcement activity.

Fox & Friends
weekend anchor Clayton Morris (also the host of the Gadgets and Games Web show, where I’m pleased to be an occasional guest) was heading home from his early shift on Sunday, and he decided to avail himself of the fine morning light to snap a few 5 MP shots with the new and improved camera.

He produced a nice gallery of pictures (especially the downstairs shot of the Broadway Apple Store), but the last three are a little bit oddly composed. It kinda looks like a guy running away from something, and that’s exactly what it was; Morris happened to walk by a store robbery in progress (!) and snapped a few pictures of the suspect fleeing the scene. He also used his to call 911 and followed the perp long enough to guide the police in for an arrest.

It’s likely that these are the first 4 photos of a crime — but if you’ve got one-of-a-kind iPhone pics to share, let us know in the comments!
