Apple may have sold 1.5 million iPhone 4s already

June 25th, 2010 | No Comments »

This will come as no surprise to anyone who saw all of those lines yesterday: Analysts are saying that Apple probably sold over 1.5 million iPhones yesterday, with 600,000 preorders, 100,000 in-store sales, and 50,000 sales from other places like Best Buy, with the rest coming from overseas. If that number is true (it’s still just an estimate at this point), then soundly broke early sales of the , which took a whole weekend to break one million sales. Still, as I said, record numbers wouldn’t be surprising at all, given the turnouts at Stores.

Oppenheimer analyst Yar Reiner also says that about 76 percent of the buyers yesterday were actually upgrading their iPhones, with only about 21 percent switching to AT&T. Of the customers getting an for the first , 41 percent were originally T-Mobile, with only 28 percent coming from Verizon (who is rumored to be getting its own iPhone soon).

No matter what the final numbers turn out to be, yesterday was a heck of a day for — anecdotally, it was the biggest launch many of us have ever seen. It’s only a day after release, and already the iPhone 4 is a huge success.

iPhone 4 vs iPhone 3GS in Pictures

June 24th, 2010 | No Comments »

You didn’t really think we’d let you get through a day without setting the 4 down next to the , did you?

The verdict? Well obviously we prefer the 4, but we will say that the lack of a curved back has us flipping the device around quite a bit post-pocket-pull. But [...]

Study: iPhone 3GS more reliable than 3G

June 24th, 2010 | No Comments »

Poor little iPhone 3G. You are my first , my first smartphone, my first “I got it the day released it” device. I love you so, and yes, I will miss you when you are gone, replaced by the shiny iPhone 4.

Apparently, I was one of the lucky ones.

First off, the is forsaken by several of iOS 4′s new features (wallpaper, multitasking, etc.). As an added bonus, warranty provider SquareTrade has released a report showing their repair rates on the and how it compares to the . In short: the is more reliable than the across the board. I’m guessing this is because the was an evolution of hardware, so they had a second “model year” to make refinements and changes.

However,
the had more power and battery related issues in the first year than the did, so it wasn’t flat-out superior hardware. But the did have less overall trouble in year one the the same period in the ’s history.
