A few years ago, the game company Wizkids – best known for collectible offerings like Mage Knight and HeroClix – took a stab at the everything-in-the-box game market with an offering called Tsuro: The Way of the Path. The game had decent graphics and a vague Asian theme but looked (and was) pretty simple. You have a pawn that moves as far as it can along the path that it’s on. Each turn, you have to extend the path by playing a tile in front of your pawn, and get a little bit closer but hopefully not too close to crashing into another player or running off the board.

Tsuro got a lukewarm reception from the boardgame community, and Wizkids eventually stopped producing the game (but it will soon be picked up by Mayfair subsidy Kosmos) Now, a graphically-simple version of the game lives in the App Store, and it makes an easy and light filler even easier.

The app comes in two versions, one for the iPad called Pathology HD that costs US$2.99, and one for the iPhone/iPod touch that’s just called Pathology and costs $1.99. Looks and gameplay are the same on both devices, and there’s only a little bit lost when playing on the small screen. Still, even a game this graphically simple is much more engaging on the iPad’s bigger screen. Along with a variety of control types, players can choose between closed and open-top versions of the Mazda MX-5 and from three different paint jobs. The proven driving physics of the multiple award- winning off-road racer Rally Master ProTM was specially reworked for the dynamic MX-5 in order to simulate an even more authentic, action-packed driving experience. Obviously with such an sought after item as the newest iPhone, there’s going to be a slew of sightings of famous people hoping to get their mitts on one as well. Like Conan O’Brien, for example.

Another celebrity sighting didn’t go off as well as the CoCo one did. Jason Bateman stood in line with others at the Apple Store at the Grove in Los Angeles. After waving his hands about at Apple Store employees, screaming “Hello! Jason Bateman here!” he was escorted into the store, ahead of the multitude waiting in front of him. Alright, I made up that screaming and waving part — the employees likely saw him and promptly kissed butt. Needless to say, the remaining crowd booed Bateman relentlessly as he emerged with the telltale white Apple shopping bag and a new iPhone 4.

If you were one of the folks standing/sitting/laying down in those long lines of your fellow bretheren, waiting to get your hands on a brand-spankin’ new iPhone 4, would you accept an offer to be brought to the front of the line? What if it was made a public spectacle? And then you were booed because you were offered it for no apparent reason? Yeah, I probably would too.

Angry Birds is one of the growing number of phenomenal success stories coming out of the App Store. It’s a simple game; you drag birds in a slingshot in order to try and get them to knock down structures and hit green pigs. It’s really resonated with audiences, though, and just like we heard with Doodle Jump, a string of constant free updates has propelled it to the top of the charts.

I got to talk to Mikael and Niklas Hed, cousins and chief officers at Rovio Mobile (the company behind Angry Birds), last week at E3 about their game and its success so far. They told me that the game has had four million downloads to date across, both, its paid and lite versions, and they said that they’ll keep updating it “as long as the underlying market keeps growing.” I asked them why they have chosen this model of just supporting the game with free updates, and they pointed to Valve’s Team Fortress 2 as an example; they’re updating the game just because they’re “focused on bringing great value” to their customers.

Future updates to the game will include new birds to play around with and a little bit of multiplayer functionality, which is coming in a “huge update” very soon. I also asked about the iPad version (which has gotten some bad reviews, since it’s basically the same as the iPhone version), and they said that it was just a matter of resources, but they did want to update that version of the app in the future.
