Ferrari’s New Driving Simulator Generates More Horsepower Than a Small Sedan [Simulators]

December 27th, 2009 | No Comments »

While a majority of those people playing Gran Turismo will never a Civic, let alone the supercars featured therein, you can bet 100% of the people “playing” Ferrari’s new rig will end up on the track some day.

This is because Ferrari’s 200-ton simulator is designed to throw as realistic a simulation as possible at the drivers, who will eventually sit behind the wheel of a real, live Formula 1 car.

The rig is comprised of 10 computers, sporting 60GB of RAM. The hydraulics it uses to simulate motion generate force equal to 174 horsepower—a whopping 34 more than the current Civic I just mentioned in my lame lead-in joke above.

A 180-degree track view is displayed to the driver using five 3D video monitors. Real engine and track sounds are pumped into the cockpit via a 3,500 watt Dolby surround sound system. This thing is unsurprisingly not available to the public and that geeky image at the top of the page is all Ferrari is giving up for now. [Gizmag via DVICE]

V-Screen Faux-3D PSP Kit: Yes, It Actually Works [Gaming]

December 24th, 2009 | No Comments »

A lot of people wrote about the V-Screen 3D kit for the PSP when it was announced. Jokes may have been made! But now Ars has actually tried one, and their results are surprising: It’s not perfect, but it works.

According to Ars, the V-Screen uses an old trick, popular with flight sim devotees, whereby a fresnel lens—at a size slightly larger than the device’s screen—is placed a short distance away from the display. This magnifies the image a bit, and more importantly, adds a sense of depth. For 3D where depth in important, like and FPSes, the effect is apparently “more compelling than it sounds on paper,” to the point that “it’s going to be hard to back to playing the on a standard screen.”

There’s no doubt that this is a faux-3D setup, but it’s also fairly cheap—$40, to be exact, which might not buy you honest 3D, but it’ll buy you the sensation. Like a Fleshlight, for your eyes! Yes. [ArsTechnica]
