Breaking: AT&T website stops selling iPhones in New York City?

December 28th, 2009 | No Comments »

Filed under:

What kind of Christmas present is this? The Consumerist is reporting that AT&T has stopped selling the iPhone in the New York metropolitan area, at least via the company’s website, due to high data congestion (or possibly due to online fraud). : While Consumerist’s post still cites ‘network congestion’ as the reason for the NYC sales hold, we’ve been told by other customer service reps that the real reason is a spike in fraudulent purchases; other sites have gotten the same story.

Stephen in Brooklyn says he made the discovery while shopping on AT&T’s website for an today:

I was on the AT&T Wireless website trying to get an . However, when I put in my zip code 11231, the site says the is unavailable. This seemed a little odd so I started punching in other famous zip codes: 90210, 60609 (spiegel catalog), 02134 (zoom, an old children’s show).
For theses cities, LA, Chicago, Boston, is available. Then I looked up some other zip codes: Dallas, Miami, St. Louis, Philadelphia, San Francisco. All those cities are ok. Then I started putting in more NYC zip codes: midtown, Staten Island, the Bronx…no available.
This is weird…AT&T has cut off New York City.

Laura Northrup at the Consumerist contacted AT&T Customer Service to check if the lack of availability in New York City was a website glitch or a planned disruption. The rep she chatted with confirmed that the phone was indeed not being sold to New Yorkers via the website, although it remains available via the store website and via both and AT&T physical stores. Mashable, BoyGeniusReport, and Gizmodo have also verified with AT&T Customer that the is indeed not available through website order in New York City.

This is sure to piss off thousands of potential customers in NYC. Let’s just hope AT&T Media Relations releases a statement clarifying when the ban will be lifted and if it will happen in any other cities. In the meantime, just think of this as more fuel for the fire as to why Verizon should have the iPhone; and of course, NYC shoppers can continue to pick up iPhones at the Stores or at the AT&T outlets in the city.

AT&T Stops Online NY iPhone Sales Due to Network Frailty? (Update: Maybe Not) [Att]

December 28th, 2009 | No Comments »

Consumerist is investigating readers’ complaints regarding the inability to purchase an through AT&T’s website when using an NY zip code. According to a CS rep: “New York isn’t ready for the .” : fraud is the more likely cause.

The conversation Consumerist’s Laura Northrup had with an AT&T customer service representative after confirming that iPhones could not be purchased when using any New York zip code almost plays out like an SNL skit:

Daphne: Welcome to AT&T Sales . How may I assist you with placing your order today?

Laura: Hi, I was looking at the and the system tells me that I cannot order one in my ZIP code. My zip code is 11231. (Brooklyn, NY) Is this true? Are iPhones no longer available in New York City?

Daphne: I am happy to be helping you today . Yes, this is correct the phone is not offered to you because New York is not ready for the .

Daphne: You don’t have enough towers to handle the phone.

Laura: Thank you for your help. So the phone is not available to people anywhere in the city?

Daphne: Yes this is correct Laura.

Yikes. Turns out Laura then went to try and buy an and was shut down using any NY zip code she tried.

Then we tried it and were similarly shot down but not with the same message Laura got from a customer service rep.

We know that AT&T’s aware that it sucks in NY, but is the solution to a localized network strain from heavy data usage to stop sales of a particular phone? Doesn’t exactly seem like the most sensible of ideas, especially since there are plenty of iPhones in AT&T’s brick-and-mortar New York stores.

Something else that’s peculiar about this “sales ban” is that folks in San Francisco, another spot where data puts a huge strain on AT&T’s network, are still able to purchase the :

A possible explanation to things comes in the form of whispers regarding some kind of New York-based sales fraud, but somehow the answer to the old ““Is it the network?” still seems to be a loud, angry “Yes!” After all, how can a bit of sales fraud prompt refusing to sell one particular phone model to an entire market? Then again, if it really is the network, why are they still selling iPhones in stores?

Whatever the real story here, I’m definitely curious to hear if AT&T makes an official statement on this odd issue. Hell, I’d be happy with just another Luke Wilson pep talk. Instead, we’re waiting for a AT&T media rep to write us back and further clarify the situation. [Consumerist]

: According to the folks at TechTrackr, AT&T told them that the reason for the mysterious lack of iPhones for New Yorkers is because AT&T “periodically modif[ies] [their] promotions and distribution channels.” AT&T refused to go beyond that statement, so this is still a bit of a head scratcher.

Q-TV2 Speakers Tuck Stereo Speakers, Subwoofer Behind Your Flat Panel TV [Speakers]

December 28th, 2009 | No Comments »

The sound quality could be dubious, but the design is clever: By squishing the sub and speakers down to a few inches in width, Q Acoustics has managed to hide a complete speaker system behind your flat panel TV.

The rig works with TVs that range between 30- and 42-inches, attaches to an existing frame or can even just chill with your TV on a stand. Available in Europe only for now, it costs a somewhat lofty $500.

My only question is one related to vibration. By placing the subwoofer directly behind the TV and against the wall/frame that supports it, will there be any visible vibration on the screen as you watch Kirk and company blast Nero into subspace? I ask because a similar thing happens to my rearview mirror when I blast my pop music at high decibels in the coche. [Q Acoustic via Red Ferret via DVICE]
